Bernhard Schulte has taken delivery of Northern Purpose, its first liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO₂) carrier and the fourth vessel built for the Northern Lights carbon capture and storage project. The vessel will transport captured CO₂ from industrial emitters across Europe to the Northern Lights receiving terminal in Norway for permanent storage beneath the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Equipped with LNG dual-fuel propulsion, a wind-assisted rotor sail, and an air lubrication system, the vessel is designed to support lower-emission operations. The delivery represents a further step in the development of large-scale CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure and the growing role of maritime transport in supporting carbon capture and decarbonization initiatives.
