SAAM Towage has introduced the first 100% electric, zero-emission tugboats in the Port of Vancouver, a pioneering move in sustainable maritime operations. Launched with a ceremony attended by Indigenous partners and government officials, these tugboats represent a significant environmental milestone, equivalent to removing 600 vehicles from the road. Supported by partners like Teck Resources and BC Hydro, the initiative aligns with SAAM’s commitment to sustainable practices and innovation in collaboration with local communities. Operations are set to begin in May, utilizing British Columbia’s hydroelectric power. This initiative is expected to cut CO2 emissions by 2,400 metric tons annually and reduce underwater noise, benefiting both the environment and aquatic life. The tugs are designed by Robert Allan Ltd and built with contributions from various industry leaders.
