Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kaisha has ordered a new car carrier equipped with an advanced autonomous navigation system from Shinkai Toyohashi Shipbuilding, with delivery scheduled for March 2026. The system uses AI-driven image recognition and radar analysis to support collision avoidance, route planning, and automatic steering under crew supervision. NYK says the technology will reduce navigator workload while improving overall safety during commercial operations. The vessel will also feature a large motion mitigation system to help minimise rolling and reduce cargo-shift risks. Additional onboard upgrades include full-ship Wi-Fi to enhance communications.
