South Korea has launched its first autonomous container ship, the Force Singapore, constructed by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard alongside its sister ship, Force Laem Chabang. This milestone is part of South Korea’s initiative to advance autonomous shipping technologies, including intelligent navigation and engine automation systems. The Force Singapore, capable of carrying 1,800 TEUs, will undergo long-distance international demonstrations later this year to validate these technologies. The project aligns with the government’s goal for ‘level 3 autonomous operation’ and is expected to enhance safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in shipping. This development could also necessitate changes in port infrastructure and operations to accommodate the new generation of autonomous vessels. The vessels, ordered by South Korean shipping company Pan Ocean in April 2022, measure 172m in length, 27.4m in width, and 14.3m in height, and are capable of carrying 1,800 TEU containers.
