China’s first hydrogen-electric tugboat has entered regular service at Qingdao Port, signalling a major advance in low-carbon maritime operations. The hybrid vessel combines hydrogen fuel cells with lithium batteries, enabling more than 12 hours of operation at 9 knots while reducing noise and vibration. Port officials estimate the tug will cut carbon dioxide emissions by around 1,500 tonnes per year compared with diesel alternatives. The vessel also incorporates domestically developed technologies, including Beidou satellite navigation and intelligent charging systems. The deployment supports Qingdao Port’s broader efforts to decarbonize operations at one of China’s busiest trade hubs.
