Research from Lloyd’s Register reveals a 197% increase in bridge alarms onboard ships in the past two decades, which has resulted in critical alarm flooding which can impair decision-making for officers and watchkeepers. The study highlights that the number of alarms per hour has surged dramatically, with peak rates reaching 74 alarms per hour on the bridge and up to 22,500 engine room alarms per day in some cases. This alarm overload, largely due to the digitalization of maritime operations and the proliferation of sensor-based technologies, contributes to alarm fatigue and diminished situational awareness. Currently, no regulatory requirements justify the safety benefits claimed by alarms. In response, LR and industry partners have formed a task force, funded by the Danish Maritime Fund, to investigate best practices for managing alarms and preventing operational risks.
