CMA CGM has launched the CMA CGM Petra, an 85,700 dwt liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container vessel and the first of six in its new series. Built by South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HD Hyundai Samho), the French-flagged Post Panamax vessel spans 272 meters, with a beam of 42.8 meters, a draft of 14.5 meters, and a capacity of 8,000 TEUs. The ship will operate on the Asia-Central South America 1 (ACSA 1) service, connecting Eastbound and Westbound trade routes. The remaining five vessels in the series, all with identical specifications, are scheduled for delivery between February and November 2025, continuing the partnership between CMA CGM and Hyundai Samho. In 2024, Hyundai Samho delivered three 8,000 TEU vessels for CMA CGM—Pointe Du Piton, Pointe Noire, and Pointe Percee. Pointe Du Piton was also part of a joint study with CMA CGM and HD Hyundai Marine Solutions to develop a life cycle assessment (LCA) model for measuring carbon emissions in shipbuilding and shipping. This initiative aims to create a global standard for emissions calculations, with results to undergo third-party verification for transparency and accuracy.
