The Evergreen neo-panamax vessel, Ever Top, has become the first containership in its class to be retrofitted with onboard CO2 capture and storage (CCS) systems, receiving the “SCCS-Full” class notation from ClassNK. This distinction indicates the ship is now equipped with state-of-the-art CCS technology.

The CCS retrofitting was carried out at Huarun Dadong Dockyard Co., Ltd. (HRDD) in China, using systems developed by the Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute. ClassNK played a pivotal role in reviewing the system components and installation plan based on its “Guidelines for Shipboard CO2 Capture and Storage Systems,” ensuring compliance through risk assessment and overseeing the installation process. Masaki Matsunaga of ClassNK expressed deep respect for Evergreen’s pioneering action in GHG abatement technology implementation, emphasizing ClassNK’s commitment to supporting decarbonization efforts through their standards and certifications.
