MV Paolo Topic, a modern bulk carrier, recently called the Lower Mainland, BC, where she loaded coal at Texada Island. Built in 2016 with a deadweight of 60,155 MT, the vessel’s port call was managed by Wheelhouse Shipping, Vancouver. Beyond her recent West Coast visit, Paolo Topic is gaining global attention as one of the most technologically advanced bulk carriers in operation, offering a clear example of how today’s shipping industry is evolving toward cleaner and more efficient operations.

The vessel has been equipped with a unique hybrid power system integrated with onboard solar energy, delivered by Wärtsila. This fully integrated solution combines batteries, solar panels, and a sophisticated Energy Management System, allowing the ship to optimize power production and significantly reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and maintenance needs while improving safety and reliability. The system enhances the vessel’s compliance with the IMO’s EEXI and CII performance standards and was installed without requiring dry-docking, using a compact containerised module placed on deck, a first-of-its-kind approach for the bulk carrier sector and a meaningful step forward in the industry’s decarbonization journey.
