Wallenius Marine has christened its new 6,500 CEU pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), Future Way, in Emden, Germany, marking a milestone in sustainable shipping between Europe and North America. The 200-meter vessel, powered by MAN Energy Solutions’ advanced engines, is the first of two ships designed under the Sleipner concept, a collaboration between Wallenius Marine and Knud E. Hansen for Volkswagen Group Logistics. Future Way and its sister ship, Way Forward, aim to significantly reduce CO2, nitrogen oxides, soot particles, and sulphur oxides emissions, improving local air quality. The ship’s innovative design features include the ability to operate without ballast water in loaded condition, lowering fuel consumption and emissions. Volkswagen Group Logistics sees these vessels as a step towards climate-friendly logistics, with hopes for broader adoption of alternative fuels from green energy in the coming decade.
