Ecojustice has filed a judicial review on behalf of community groups and a resident, contesting the BC government’s decision to let the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) pipeline proceed under its expired 2014 environmental assessment certificate. The challenge argues that limited activity, including tree clearing on just 5% of the route before the November 2024 deadline, does not qualify as a “substantial start.” Opponents say the ruling undermines environmental safeguards and ignores current regional, climate, and community conditions. The case parallels another Ecojustice-led challenge against the “substantial start” status of the massive KSM mine project, highlighting broader concerns over how BC applies its environmental assessment rules to major industrial developments.
