The Canadian government is allocating over $490 million to Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver for the construction of Multi-Purpose Vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard. This funding, spread across two contracts, will enable pre-construction activities, design refinement, and material procurement. Aimed at enhancing the Coast Guard’s capabilities, these versatile ships will support icebreaking, search and rescue, scientific research, environmental response, and more. This initiative, marking the second financial commitment to Seaspan for this project, anticipates the delivery of the first vessels by 2030, with subsequent deliveries extending into the mid-2040s. The investment underscores Canada’s commitment to maintaining safe and efficient waterways, environmental protection, and national security.
