BC Ferries plans to build seven new vessels with 44% more passenger capacity than the six they will replace, emphasizing environmental sustainability. These future ships will be battery-electric hybrids, designed for reduced greenhouse gas emissions and increased energy efficiency, pending the availability of on-shore recharging infrastructure. The company has initiated a bidding process for the construction of these ships and announced refits for 20 due to age. The CEO highlighted the project’s focus on improving customer experiences, increasing route capacity, and enhancing environmental performance, aiming for the ships to be operational by 2029. No cost estimate for the program has been disclosed yet.
