BHP has announced a major cost and schedule overrun for its Jansen potash project in Saskatchewan, with the first stage now projected to cost up to $7.4 billion, 30% more than the original $5.7 billion, and delayed to 2027. The company cited design changes, inflation, and productivity issues. Stage two has also been pushed to 2031, and its $4.9 billion investment has been paused pending review. The delay may support potash prices but adds pressure to overall project costs. The project, central to BHP’s long-term diversification strategy, has been over a decade in development.
