BHP has lifted the projected cost of the first phase of its Jansen potash project in Canada to US$8.4 billion, exceeding last year’s revised budget by US$1 billion and up sharply from the original US$5.7 billion approval in 2021. First production is now expected in mid-2027, with a second development stage still under review. Elsewhere, BHP reported broadly in-line production, including record first-half iron ore output, though pricing has been pressured by ongoing tensions with China. Copper output dipped slightly, but higher prices supported revenue as BHP continues to pursue growth in the metal amid intensifying competition among major miners.
