The Government of Canada has shortlisted Germany’s Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean as qualified suppliers for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP), aimed at acquiring up to 12 modern, under-ice capable submarines. The decision follows a detailed assessment of timelines, international lessons, and 25 industry responses to last year’s Request for Information. Ottawa says the new fleet will strengthen sovereignty, alliances, and Canada’s defense capabilities, while generating long-term economic benefits through Canadian industry partnerships. Seaspan Shipyards, already experienced in submarine sustainment, welcomed the announcement and emphasized the importance of early collaboration with builders to ensure operational readiness and lasting domestic benefits.
