Canada and Japan are set to formalize new partnerships covering energy, defence, and intelligence sharing following discussions at the G7 summit. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba confirmed in Calgary that while many of the agreements were reached in principle earlier this year, formal deals are expected soon. A key focus is energy cooperation, with Japan looking to reduce its reliance on Russia by sourcing more natural gas from Canada, particularly through the LNG Canada project, which will export Alberta’s gas via BC. and in which Mitsubishi is a shareholder. This partnership supports Japan’s energy security and helps Alberta diversify its energy exports, 80% of which currently go to the US.
