The federal government has announced $1.2 billion in new and renewed measures to protect Canada’s oceans as marine traffic and West Coast trade infrastructure expand. Investments include more than $740 million for ocean conservation, marine traffic monitoring, Coast Guard response capacity, VHF and radar coverage, pollution preparedness and modernization of marine safety and inspection systems. A further $136 million will support marine mammal protection and underwater-noise mitigation, while $186 million will advance Indigenous-led governance and conservation in the Great Bear Sea region. The measures form part of a broader national ocean strategy being developed alongside expansion of infrastructure including the Port of Vancouver and Roberts Bank Terminal 2.
