Canada will use this week’s G7 energy and environment ministers’ meeting in Toronto to push for stronger commitments on securing critical mineral supplies, Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said. With most G7 nations still dependent on China for key materials like rare earths and battery metals, Canada plans to advance funding tools, offtake agreements, and stockpiling initiatives to strengthen allied supply chains. Hodgson said several concrete announcements are expected, showcasing a coordinated approach to mineral security. Canada, a major producer of nickel, copper, and cobalt, aims to position itself as a reliable partner for G7 allies amid trade tensions with the US.
