Canada’s marine shipping industry is launching a campaign aimed at attracting young workers, in collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada, to address the sector’s aging workforce. The “Shipping on the Seaway” initiative, part of Ocean School, offers immersive online experiences with 360-degree tours of freighters to spark interest among 11 to 17-year-olds. With about 43% of the marine workforce expected to retire within the next decade, the industry faces the challenge of hiring approximately 19,000 new workers. The campaign aims to showcase the vital roles and adventurous life on ships to engage the younger generation, highlighting opportunities in a sector crucial to Canada’s economy.
