The Canadian Coast Guard has clarified that it will not participate in military conflicts, even after being placed under the Department of National Defence. Deputy Commissioner Marc Mes told MPs that the Coast Guard’s duties remain civilian, focused on search and rescue, environmental response, and navigation aids, and that crews would “leave” if war breaks out. Despite the transfer aimed at enhancing NATO spending and coordination, officials confirmed there are no plans to arm vessels or engage in combat roles, emphasizing that the Coast Guard’s role is security-related, not defensive.
