Amid escalating U.S. tariffs and unpredictable trade policy under President Trump, many Canadian companies are rethinking their reliance on American markets despite potential new trade deals. With tariffs on steel, aluminium, and autos already in place—and threats of more—businesses and investors are demanding stability that many feel the U.S. no longer offers. Some firms are pivoting to Asian and European markets, setting up foreign offices or shifting focus to domestic customers to mitigate risk. Others, like tool steel distributors and packaging firms, are facing rising costs, shrinking sales, and strained cross-border relationships. Even companies not yet directly hit by tariffs are pre-emptively adjusting pricing or renegotiating contracts to protect against future disruptions.
