China has launched an anti-dumping investigation into Canadian pea starch, alleging below-market pricing that harms domestic producers, in its latest retaliation against Canada’s tariffs on Chinese steel. The probe follows earlier Chinese duties on Canadian canola oil and halogenated butyl rubber, with new deposit requirements for importers taking effect this week. The escalation comes after Canada imposed steep steel tariffs and tighter import quotas on non-FTA countries, including China, in response to US measures. Analysts say Beijing is willing to ease agricultural tariffs if Canada removes its surtax on Chinese EVs, but the ongoing trade dispute raises the risk of further Chinese action against Canadian farm exports.
