CN Rail has filed a claim in the BC Supreme Court against unnamed demonstrators who allegedly created rail blockades in northern BC in February in support of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation. CN claims a two-day protest in New Hazelton affected nearly 5,000 freight cars, stranding the Port of Prince Rupert and backing up rail traffic as far east as Winnipeg, causing significant economic damage. The railway is seeking damages, a permanent injunction against rail blockaders’ “unlawful and unauthorized” conduct, and an enforcement order for police.
