CN Rail has unveiled a new medium-horsepower hybrid electric locomotive, developed with Knoxville Locomotive Works (KLW), as part of its sustainability initiatives. The 3,200-horsepower hybrid unit combines a 2.4MWh battery with a 700HP biofuel-ready diesel engine, offering up to 50% fuel savings compared to traditional locomotives. Testing will occur over the next six months in CN yards and branch lines across Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and cold-weather locations in Western Canada. This pilot project aligns with CN’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions and drive innovation in rail decarbonization.
