Barge Operator

Headquartered in Burnaby, B.C., Island Tug and Barge Ltd. (ITB), a subsidiary of Tidewater Canada Inc., is the West Coast’s largest bulk transporter of refined petroleum products and bunker fuels. Our services include bulk fuel transportation, specialty towing and marine logistics. We are currently seeking full-time positions for Barge Operators.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the highest level of conduct and safety while representing ITB
  • Maintain and implement the ISM / ISO System
  • Maintain and implement the ISO 9001 Quality Management System
  • Report all deficiencies, near misses, hazards, and incidents to management
  • Maintain customer product & cargo integrity (on-spec, without damage)
  • Maintain, repair, and clean barge equipment and spaces including Barge Operator accommodations on company vessels
  • Maintain accurate records of the loading and offloading of cargo processes with respect to times, volumes, and systems
  • Carefully initial all reports, test logs, maintenance log entries, and any other barge related documents and records in keeping with ISM / ISO requirements for record verification
  • Accurately track, record, and report barge inventories
  • Maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of the many different fuel products ITB carries: specifications, dangerous characteristics, and compatibility with other fuel products
  • Test fuel products when necessary

Training and Qualifications:

  • Supervisor of Oil Transfer Operations (SOTO)
  • Marine Emergency Duties
  • Radio Operator Certificate (ROC-MC)
  • Marine Advanced First Aid
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other computer applications
  • Transport Canada medical

Special Requirements:

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport with no travel restrictions

Island Tug and Barge Ltd. has a zero tolerance for drug and alcohol impairment (including cannabis) and it is a requirement for all prospective employees to read our Drug, Alcohol and Cannabis Policy and sign an acknowledgement to confirm that they have read and understand it fully. A pre-employment medical including a drug and alcohol screen will be scheduled prior to the first day of employment… a non-negative test result (either positive or inconclusive) will delay or possibly terminate the hiring process.

It is also a requirement for all prospective employees to provide the following documentation prior to their first day of employment:

  • a clear ICBC Driver’s Abstract and Criminal Record Check (either from the Commissionaires or the RCMP)
