Job Summary:

You are a marine professional looking to build your career in the role of ‘Marine Safety and Compliance Coordinator’. In this position, you actively attend vessels and customer facilities to verify all safety requirements are met. Using your problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills you review training needs, identify gaps in operating procedures and put measures in place to correct gaps, including updates to the Domestic Safety System (DSM). This role reports to the Designated Person Ashore and will work closely with the mariners, Port Captain, maintenance, HSE and the operations team.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage the Domestic Safety Management System for the marine division and provide independent advice to the DPA and operations management regarding the company HS&E program.
  • Reviews the effectiveness of safety procedures and ensures standard operating procedures are followed through regular onsite procedural audits.
  • Updates safety procedures and actively educates the workforce regarding changes. Monitor timely and effective close out of fleet safety concerns and corrective actions. 
  • Demonstrates active visible leadership by driving compliance to leading indicators by all marine employees while targeting 15-20% field presence.
  • Coordinates risk assessments as required and conducts regular onsite Hazard Assessments by identifying and addressing unsafe conditions and behaviours.
  • Manage incident reporting for the marine group, promotes near miss reporting and conducts investigations, identifying root causes and creating safety alerts.
  • Actively monitors operational condition of company vessels and applicable customer depots.
  • Ensure vessel compliance is in line with Transport Canada regulations and the safety management program.
  • Assist with internal/external audits as required.
  • Supports the company case management program and manage the return-to-work process. Actively engage with employees and initiates work accommodations for minor injuries to avoid loss time.

 

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of Marine background with knowledge of relevant Canadian and international marine regulations required
  • Knowledge of BC coastal waters including Fraser River and Transport Canada Regulations will be considered an asset
  • Tugboat/OSV and/or 500GRT experience will be considered an asset
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office and Excel
  • Strong relationship development skills & ability to work effectively in a team atmosphere

Work Conditions:

  • Successful candidate is required to be based in the Richmond office which will require the person to reside in the greater Vancouver area.
