APM Terminals has acquired the Panama Canal Railway Company (PCRC) from Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Limited and Lanco Group/Mi-Jack, expanding its intermodal footprint in Central America. The 76-kilometre railway, which runs parallel to the Panama Canal, provides a critical cargo link between the Atlantic and Pacific and generated USD 77 million in revenue in 2024. The acquisition comes as the Panama Canal recovers from transit restrictions due to drought, and aligns with Maersk’s recent use of a rail-based “land bridge” solution across Panama. APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen described the purchase as a strategic infrastructure investment that strengthens service offerings to global shipping customers, while CPKC characterized the sale as a move to sharpen focus on its core North American operations.
