DP World has announced the successful completion of initial testing of a hydrogen fuel cell rubber-tired gantry (RTG) crane at its Vancouver terminal, marking a significant step toward decarbonizing its global port operations. The retrofitted RTG integrates hydrogen fuel cells, battery storage, and regenerative energy systems to eliminate diesel emissions from one of the most energy-intensive pieces of port equipment. Now entering a year-long field trial, the project will evaluate real-world performance, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits compared to traditional diesel-powered RTG cranes. At the Vancouver terminal, 19 cranes account for half of diesel consumption, highlighting the potential impact of scaling this innovation across DP World’s 1,500-unit global RTG fleet. The initiative was delivered in partnership with TYCROP Manufacturing Ltd., H2 Portable Power Corp., and HTEC.
