DP World is negotiating to operate the C$1.6 billion Contrecoeur container terminal, which would boost the Port of Montreal’s capacity by more than 50% when completed in 2029. The project, supported by over C$500 million from Ottawa and Quebec, aims to strengthen Canada’s trade links with Europe amid tensions with the US. Montreal’s port is projected to hit full capacity by 2030, and the new terminal would add 1.15 million containers annually. DP World, partly owned in Canada by La Caisse, has emerged as the leading operator candidate, though talks remain confidential. Prime Minister Mark Carney has promoted the terminal as part of his broader nation-building infrastructure push, alongside Churchill’s northern expansion.
