Leading Japanese firms NYK Line, NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers, and Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, alongside British renewable energy company Drax Group, have signed an MoU to develop the world’s first biomass-fueled ship and the technology to power it. This initiative supports Japan’s shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, driven by increasing demand for biomass pellets. The project will focus on creating an on-board biomass fuel plant that uses gasification to generate power, potentially reducing carbon emissions by 22%. The companies aim to complete the bioship by 2029.
