The Dutch-flagged freighter Thamesborg has run aground in the Franklin Strait while transiting Canada’s Northwest Passage en route from China to Baie-Comeau. Operator Wagenborg confirmed there were no injuries or pollution, and the vessel remains stable as damage is assessed. The Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Sir Wilfrid Laurier arrived on scene within nine hours, with salvage assistance being arranged. The 173-meter, ice-class 1A vessel routinely sails the Arctic shortcut, which saves about 14 days compared to the Panama Canal.
