Ahead of the 82nd meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) starting September 30, submissions to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are expected to set records. Notably, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) has proposed that the IMO Data Collection System (IMO DCS) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings be made publicly accessible. Currently, IMO DCS data is available only in aggregate and anonymized forms, limiting stakeholders’ ability to use it for decision-making and GHG reduction. EDF argues that increased data transparency would facilitate more sustainable commercial choices and better support for high-performing green vessels. MEPC 82 will also focus on carbon levy discussions, which are anticipated to be a major topic.
