The US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is seeking public input on questions related to maritime data accuracy with a focus on information related to containers moving through marine terminals. To supplement the first study released last year, the Commission seeks responses on what and when data elements are communicated between transportation service providers and importers/exporters. FMC Commissioner Carl Bentzel is leading the Maritime Transportation Data Initiative (MTDI) which is intended to catalogue the status quo in maritime data elements, metrics, transmission, and access, and to identify key gaps in data definitions/classification and utilization. The goal is to develop recommendations for common data standards and lexicon and access policies/protocols.
