A U.S. Government Accountability Office report has identified gaps in Coast Guard preparedness and coordination for marine firefighting, following 886 nearshore vessel fires between 2015 and 2025. The GAO recommends clearer Coast Guard coordination responsibilities, more hands-on vessel training for local fire departments, improved information sharing and better guidance for activating vessel response plans. It also urged Congress to consider requiring response plans for nontank vessels using alternative fuels, including battery-powered vessels, as existing legislation predates their widespread adoption. The Coast Guard agreed with all five recommendations directed to the agency.
