On November 5, dockworker trade unions from around the world will meet in Lisbon for the “People Over Profit: Anti-Automation Conference,” organized by the International Longshoremen’s Association and the International Dockworkers Council. The event aims to develop a global strategy to resist what unions see as profit-driven automation threatening jobs, safety, and workers’ rights in the maritime sector. While port automation is advancing rapidly, especially in Europe and the U.S., unions warn that unregulated technological shifts could erode employment and community stability.
