A University of New South Wales researcher, Associate Professor Shane Keating, has developed an AI-powered algorithm that optimizes cargo ship routes by harnessing ocean currents, particularly swirling currents known as eddies, to reduce fuel use and cut emissions. Through a UNSW spinout company, CounterCurrent, Keating aims to deliver real-time, eddy-aware routing forecasts to the shipping industry, likening the tool to a “Google Maps for the sea.” Supported by advancements in satellite technology, including the SWOT satellite, his system offers a more efficient alternative to traditional great circle routes. Trials on over 100 vessels have shown up to 20% fuel savings.
