Transport Canada has issued Ship Safety Bulletin 16/2020 – Hazards and Risks of Girding during Towing Operations to caution tug operators of the dangers of a tug girding when under tow and provide best practices to avoid capsizing or sinking. Girding occurs when a tug is pulled broadside by a towline force and is unable to manoeuvre out of this position. Regular testing of the Emergency Release System is encouraged.
