China’s coal imports increased slightly in June after declining in the previous two months, according to customs data. This rise in imports was driven by power utilities seeking high-quality coal from international suppliers to replenish their inventories at the beginning of the peak electricity demand season. China, the largest consumer of coal globally, purchased 39.87 million metric tons of coal in June, up from 39.58 million metric tons in May. The first half of 2023, China’s total coal imports reached 221.93 million metric tons, nearly double the amount compared to the same period last year.
