Holland America Line, part of Carnival Corporation, has initiated a long-term biofuel test on its flagship, Rotterdam, using 100% low carbon intensity biofuel while navigating the Norwegian World Heritage Fjords. The ship was fueled with GoodFuels MR1-100 sustainable biofuel, derived from organic waste certified according to the EU Renewable Energy Directive, in the Port of Rotterdam before departing on April 27, 2024. This biofuel, supplied by FincoEnergies, is expected to reduce life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 86%. The testing phase involves running one of the ship’s four engines on this biofuel during cruises within the fjords, with plans to potentially expand its use to more engines over the summer.
