The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) will resume Master Contract negotiations in New Jersey next month, following a three-day strike earlier in October that disrupted U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports. These talks aim to finalize a new agreement covering ILA port workers at 36 ports from Maine to Texas. A recent tentative agreement extended the current Master Contract until January 15, 2025, and included a provisional wage increase of 62%, a primary point of contention. Other outstanding issues, including automation, remain on the table. The upcoming negotiations are set against the backdrop of the Biden Administration’s decision to prioritize collective bargaining over direct intervention, urging port employers to enhance their offers. With January’s deadline just before Chinese New Year—a critical period for shipping—stakeholders are hopeful for a swift, amicable resolution to prevent further supply chain disruptions. The maritime industry is closely watching the negotiations, as an agreement will impact port operations, supply chains, and economic stability.
