The International Maritime Organization (IMO), led by Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, will participate in COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11-22, 2024, focusing on advancing maritime decarbonization. The IMO will highlight progress on achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 2050, as per its 2023 strategy. Discussions will emphasize cooperation with the energy and financial sectors to support the global transition to cleaner energy. Recent developments include advancing mid-term GHG reduction measures, such as a global pricing mechanism and marine fuel standards. Building on COP 28 in Dubai, where green shipping initiatives and commitments to hydrogen-based fuels were announced, the IMO’s presence at COP 29 aims to further align maritime efforts with broader climate goals.
