An Indian harbour pilot, Captain Shishir Nishkant Patange, employed by the Deendayal Port Authority, has obtained an arrest warrant for Fujian Shipping’s vessel Jin Hai Hua, due to injuries sustained in a fall that purportedly ended his career. The incident occurred on March 4, as Patange attempted to board the vessel via the gangway, which collapsed, severely injuring his left wrist and resulting in a permanent loss of mobility. Claiming negligence on the part of the vessel’s owners for improper maintenance of the gangway, Patange is seeking damages of approximately $822,000 for pain, suffering, and lost future earnings. This rare legal move, involving the admiralty arrest of a ship over a personal injury claim, highlights the challenges faced by individuals seeking compensation for workplace injuries from foreign ship owners.
