Metallurgical coal featured prominently in discussions on critical minerals at the BC Natural Resources Forum, with industry leaders arguing it remains essential for steelmaking and the clean energy transition. Speakers noted that while Europe and the United States recognize metallurgical coal as a critical mineral, it is not included on Canada’s federal list. The sector underpins the production of steel used in electric vehicles, renewable energy infrastructure, and transit systems. In 2024, metallurgical coal was BC’s largest export, valued at $10.3 billion, with most production destined for overseas markets. Industry representatives called for greater public and government recognition of its economic and strategic importance, alongside continued high environmental standards.
