The Iranian foreign minister announced that the 25 crew members of the MSC Aries, a container ship operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company and seized in the Strait of Hormuz on April 13, have been released. However, the vessel itself remains under Iranian control. According to the Foreign Minister, the ship is being held on judicial grounds for allegedly turning off its radar in Iran’s territorial waters, compromising navigation security. The crew, from various nations including India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Russia, and Estonia, were released as a “humanitarian act” and are free to return home. Despite the crew’s release, MSC Aries continues to be detained near Bandar Abbas alongside other seized vessels. The ship’s ongoing detention is tied to issues regarding maritime law compliance, as emphasized by the minister.
