The International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) has released updated guidelines on transporting electric vehicles at sea, highlighting the distinct fire risks associated with them compared to conventional cars. EV fires can produce flammable gases and reach peak temperatures above 1,000°C, raising safety concerns for car carriers with open deck designs. IUMI urges rapid activation of fixed firefighting systems rather than manual response, noting foam systems have limited effectiveness. The guidelines feed into IMO discussions on strengthening global fire safety standards for ships carrying EVs.
