ClassNK, Nihon Shipyard, and IMC have embarked on a joint R&D project focusing on the application and safety evaluation of Anti-Roll Tanks (ART) on large containerships. ARTs, which reduce a ship’s roll by moving liquid within a tank, are being considered for large containerships to enhance container loading efficiency and prevent parametric roll—a phenomenon leading to container collapse accidents. This partnership will see Nihon Shipyard working on the design and optimal installation of ART, IMC conducting demonstrations to assess ART’s effectiveness in reducing roll, and ClassNK developing appropriate evaluation methods.
