Darren Fisher, MP for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour, announced at Irving Shipbuilding Inc. in Halifax the keel laying of the CCGS Donjek Glacier, the first of two new Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships for the Canadian Coast Guard, and the start of construction for the second ship, the CCGS Sermilik Glacier. These ships will enhance Canada’s capabilities in fisheries enforcement, search and rescue, icebreaking, environmental response, and scientific research. They are part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy, which aims to modernize the Coast Guard fleet and support Canadian shipbuilding jobs.
