The longshore foremen in British Columbia have overwhelmingly rejected the final offer from the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), with 99% of the 584 foremen voting against it. Negotiations between ILWU Local 514 and BCMEA began in May 2023, culminating in a mediation effort that failed to reach a tentative agreement. The union is now legally positioned to strike after a cooling-off period and additional strike votes. In response, BCMEA expressed disappointment, highlighting their proposal of a four-year agreement that included a 19.2% wage increase and enhanced benefits, aiming for stability in West Coast port operations. The parties’ grievances will be reviewed by the Canada Industrial Relations Board during hearings scheduled for early July.
