Longer sailing distances to underpin dry bulk market through 2026

Longer average sailing distances are expected to support dry bulk demand through 2026, helping offset accelerating fleet growth, according to new analysis from BIMCO. Improved global economic prospects have prompted BIMCO to raise its 2026 demand forecast, with tonne-mile demand boosted by longer iron ore and bauxite trades from the South Atlantic to Asia. Freight markets are expected to remain relatively stable in 2026, with rates potentially staying strong before weakening in 2027 as fleet growth outpaces demand. Capesize vessels are likely to outperform due to low fleet growth and longer routes. A full return to Red Sea transits and China’s economic slowdown remain key downside risks.
